Overview

Unlike the other structures in this collection, St. Joseph Point began as a federal lighthouse. Its lantern rises from the center of a raised wood-frame dwelling designed to house the keeper and family.

History

The station entered service in 1902 and guided vessels into St. Joseph Bay until a modern tower replaced it in 1955. The dwelling was sold, moved inland, and eventually used as a barn. Danny Raffield purchased it in 1970, moved it to its present waterfront site in 1979, and led a decades-long restoration. A replica lantern room based on original plans was installed in 2011.

Visiting & Access

The lighthouse is a private residence south of Port St. Joe. It can be viewed from the public road, but the grounds, dwelling, and tower are closed without the owner’s permission.

Current Status

The restored structure remains privately owned and residential. It is no longer an aid to navigation and is listed separately because it is not a publicly operated historic light station.
