Cedar Keys Lighthouse is located on Seahorse Key which is about 3 miles west-southwest of Cedar Key. The lighthouse was designed by Lt. George Meade and cost $10,000 to complete; it was first lit on August 1, 1854. The lighthouse is only 28 feet high, but since it was built on the highest hill on the Gulf Coast, the focal plane is 75 feet and the fixed white light could be seen for more than 12 miles. It is the oldest Lighthouse still standing on Florida’s west coast.

Seahorse Key is supposed to be haunted by a headless horseman, especially during the full moon. A number of lighthouse keepers left citing the headless horseman as the reason. The headless horseman is said to be the pirate Pierre LeBlanc who rides a palomino and guards the treasure of the pirate Jean Lafitte. In addition, people have seen a white mule on Seahorse Key which some fishermen believe is the ghost of a young girl killed by a Union sailor and thrown overboard.

The lighthouse was deactivated in 1915 and turned over to the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 1936. In 1951 the University of Florida entered into an agreement with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to lease a portion of the island including the lighthouse. Today the lighthouse is used as a dormitory for marine biology students and visiting scientists.

The Board Meeting and membership meeting will both be on Friday night so we will all have the time to visit the island on Saturday. The meeting will be held at the Cedar Key RV Resort CK RV Resort Map, beginning 5 PM, for the board meeting, followed by the membership meeting.  Our guest speakers will be from St Marks, Anclote Key and Jupiter and will present their Project Outcome Reports. Details are still being worked for another speaker.

A dinner buffet is being catered by the Island Room, and will be served about 6:30. The meal will consist of a Garden Salad with fresh baked rolls and butter, Cedar Key Seafood Medley over pasta (clams, shrimp, scallops, and fish), Chicken Marsala, Panko Encrusted Flounder with Soy Orange Glaze, Roasted New Potatoes, Steamed Vegetables, lemon Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce, Ice tea and Water. Wine will also be available.

Saturday morning the boat will start running at 9:00 AM and continue every 30 minutes. Since the Lighthouse will be open to the public, the boat is on a first come basis. During our wait for the boats we hope to have coffee, juice, Doughnuts and pasties at the Pavilion in the park by the dock. Map

The cost is $65 for members and $90 for non-members and includes the Friday night meeting, meal and wine, the Saturday morning coffee, etc. and the boat trip to & from Seahorse Key. For those members that sponsored a Guest at the last meeting and that Guest joined FLA within 30 days this meeting is 1/2 price for us, use code FLANMS when registering.
