Services and Activities of the Florida Lighthouse Association, Inc.
I. Publication of the FLA FLASH a quarterly, educational, professional journal which details the current state of Florida’s lighthouses, discusses the present problems with lighthouse preservation in this state and around the nation, and provides educational articles on the nature of and history of Florida’s lighthouses. Much of this information is also right here on our Web site.

II. Educational lectures, programs, and special tours at lighthouses provided during the Association’s quarterly meetings which occur at different lighthouses around the state. Since the founding of the Association, such programs and meetings have occurred at the Cape Florida, Ponce de Leon Inlet, Hillsboro Inlet, and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouses. Meetings are presently planned at Ponce de Leon Inlet and Cape Canaveral Lighthouses, and future meeting may be held at Egmont Key and the St. Augustine Lighthouses.

III. Fund raising programs to assist in preservation projects for Florida’s lighthouses:

1) A campaign has been started to raise money in support of the preservation plans for the Cape St. George Lighthouse near Apalachicola, Florida’s most endangered lighthouse.

2) A "Memorial Endowment Fund for Lighthouse Preservation" has been established to fund an endowment fund from which the annual interest will be dedicated to various lighthouse preservation projects.

3) A campaign is underway to seek authorization from the legislature for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to issue a specialty automobile license plate featuring a Florida lighthouse, the proceeds from which will support lighthouse and other maritime heritage preservation in this state.

4) Special educational programs featuring noted lighthouse historians and speakers offered to the general public from which donations are solicited for the support of this Association and its lighthouse preservation programs.

IV. Professional assistance to other lighthouse organizations and to the State of Florida:

1) Advice and assistance to newly forming organizations in Apalachicola, Pensacola, Mayport, Pompano Beach, Sanibel, and Fernandina, Florida, with regards to establishing their own non-profit organizations to aid in the preservation and interpretation of their local lighthouses.

2) Service as a liaison between forming lighthouse preservation organizations and the United States Coast Guard, particularly with regard to the Coast Guard’s leasing of the lighthouse properties to the new preservation organizations.

3) Cooperation with the Division of Historical Resources, State of Florida, with determining which of Florida’s lighthouses are in need of structural and historical assessment and how state grant funds may best and most effectively be used for the purpose of planning and effecting the preservation of Florida’s historic lighthouses and light stations.
