Anne Stewart Anne Stewart was born in Indiana, a state with only one lighthouse. She climbed her first lighthouse in Key West on her honeymoon; she was hooked. Her doctorate is in education and she believes strongly that education holds the key to preservation of lighthouses and the reefs and shorelines that they protect. Her special interest lies in the lighthouse keepers and their families, especially focusing on the roll of women both as wives and keepers. |

FL. Lights Project Kathy A. Fleming has been the Executive Director of the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, Inc. since 1994. In 2002, The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, Inc. was chosen as the first lighthouse in the nation to receive ownership of it's lighthouse tower under transfer from the United States Coast Guard, through the General Services Administration and the National Park Service, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) as a non-profit group. St. Augustine Lighthouse was the third NHLPA transfer overall in the nation. In 2003 The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum was part of a team that was recognized with an National Preservation Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for their work in helping to shape this positive legislation that allowed local non-profits to compete on even footing with local governments to own and care for the lighthouses they love. After taking the St. Augustine Lighthouse through the NHLPA pilot program, and recognizing both the risks to non-profits and the rewards of positive partnerships to local lighthouse preservation groups, Ms. Fleming and the St. Augustine Lighthouse became active nationally protecting lighthouses and smoothing communications between small local groups and governmental entities. SAL&M staff have held two national conferences for this purpose, one in Florida and another in Newport RI which was sponsored and funded by the GSA. She has participated in other conferences on lighthouse-related topics. Fleming lectures widely on the power of heritage tourism, the economics of historic preservation and building stronger small museum and preservation organizations. |
